WiseCurls Beauty: Vanessa
WiseCurls.com is thrilled to have the lovely Vanessa of Onyxroseonline as this week’s WiseCurls beauty. She is a WiseWoman who is focused on inspiring women to wholeheartedly embrace our hair in its natural state. Continue reading to learn more about Vanessa.
WC: When did you decide to embark on your natural hairurney?
V: A year or so after I started on my healthy hair journey, I became interested in natural hair. I watched a lot of naturals on Youtube, and I was amazed at the variety of textures and the versatility of natural hair. I wasn’t exactly sure what I was getting myself into, but I knew I wanted to at least try it.
WC: What method did you use? (transitioned or BC’dimmediately)?
V: I BCed after 6.5 months. I wish I could’ve gone longer, but I was tired of dealing with both textures. One day I was in my dorm room thinking “Today is gonna be the day I BC.” I had never been so certain about anything in my life as much as this…well, other than which college I wanted to attend, lol.
WC: Do you have a hair regimen? If so, please share with fellow WiseCurls.
V: I usually shampoo, condition, and detangle every week/every two weeks. I try to deep condition every time I wash my hair, but sometimes (OK, a lot of the time), I’m just too lazy. But I do deep condition at least twice a month, especially during the winter. Throughout the week I usually wear two-strand twists. These usually last about two weeks. Then, I wear a puff for a couple days and wash my hair again.
WC: What are your hair staples?
V: The only staples I have are coconut oil, castor oil, and Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose conditioner. Everything else seems to work the same way on my hair, but I’m really liking Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Curl Milk…moisture for days! Especially during the spring/summer.
WC: What are some of the misconceptions you’ve experienced?
V: Natural hair is “dirty,” people who have natural hair are lazy, natural hair is unprofessional. If you dye your hair, you’re not natural. Afros are the only natural hairstyle. *sigh* The list goes on and on.
WC: What are your hair struggles?
V: Shrinkage! That is really the only thing that drives me crazy. I can deal with the single-strand knots and occasional split ends/dryness, but shrinkage makes a girl wanna cry, lol. It’s kind of inconvenient having to use different techniques to stretch my hair, but it’s bearable. Not to say that I don’t like my tight coils, but it’d be nice to have my length hang even just a little bit more on its own.
WC: Who is your natural hair inspiration?
V: To tell you the truth, I see a lot of women in my area rocking natural hair and they are my inspirations. Sure, I love the hair of certain celebs and Youtubers, but there is nothing like being out and about and seeing woman after woman pass by with a head full of gorgeous hair. I love it!
WC: What prompted you to begin your blog and what do you strive to accomplish?
V: I enjoy writing, so I thought it’d be cool to share my journey with others online. The tagline on my banner is “embracing natural beauty as the rule, not the exception,” and that is what I strive to accomplish. Although it seems like a lot of people are going natural nowadays, there is still a lot of hostility and misconceptions about natural hair. I want people’s negative perceptions of natural hair/beauty to change.
WC: Who is the WiseCurl behind Onyx Rose?
V: I’m just a shy, easygoing, goofy girl trying to enjoy life. I love creating memories with friends and family, dancing like no one’s watching, writing….really, I’m not hard to please! I hope to have a successful career as a professional writer once I graduate in spring 2012. Regardless of what goals I pursue in the future, I just want to be genuinely happy and successful.
WC: Any advice you’d like to share with WiseCurl readers?
V: If you’re thinking about going natural or are newly natural and struggling, don’t allow people’s misconceptions to discourage you. There is an abundance of women online…Twitter, hair forums, blogs that are more than willing to provide motivation and help with hair care, so don’t be scurred… take advantage of it!
